The project mobilizes human and financial resources to keep the forests standing, preventing the planned suppression of their vegetation for the traditional economic use used in the region (livestock and agriculture). According to PRODES, a project that monitors deforestation in the Amazon Forest, the State of Amazonas, where the ABC project is located. 33,384.00 km² of tropical forest has already been lost, with 2022 being a record year since 1998, with 2,600 km² deforested. In the PRODES deforestation ranking, Itacoatiara, the city where the project is located. It is the municipality in Amazonas with the 6″ largest deforested area. In proportion, it is the 3rd most deforested municipality, with 20.81% of all vegetation removed, indicating great pressure for the economic exploitation of the region. Table 1 presents the first project activities that will be implemented over the next few months.

Table 1. Main activities related to threat prevention

PREVENTION OF PLANNED DEFORESTATION:

  • Mobilization of financial resources to block the vegetation suppression plan filed with IPAAM;
  • Technical structuring of carbon project feasibility:
  • Identification and management of local stakeholders;
  • Prohibition of unauthorized people entering the project area;
  • Prohibition of hunting, fishing and unauthorized activities within the project area.

FIRE PREVENTION AND CONTROL:

  • Communication of fire outbreaks to the administrative sector, recording in the fire occurrence form and communication to the competent bodies. In case of fire, call the region's fire brigade team.
  • Supply of materials and equipment for Fire Fighting and Control activities.
  • Use of protection techniques with natural firebreaks and artificial firebreaks.
  • Guidance to the neighborhood regarding prevention, measures and good practices to prevent fires from starting.

The project's baseline assumed that, in its absence, the forest would have been legally cut by its owner, who has by law the right to remove 20% of his total property. The wood from the cut would be partially used for commercialization; the rest would be burned to clean the areas. After this, the area would have been transformed into pasture, one of the most common practices in the region of the State of Amazonas.

The project's initial deforestation model states that, in its absence, the 20% of the area subject to suppression would be converted in 10 years. This value is based on the suppression plan for the area that is being processed by the State environmental body responsible for its approval, IPAAM.

Yes, in addition to the REED+ project, the owner of the seven lots that cover the ABC project area intends to carry out sustainable forest management activities. The existence of management does not interfere with the generation of credits, since the activity will only be carried out in the property's legal reserve areas, while the project area corresponds to the property's multiple use area - the one that could be deforested -, according to with the 2012 Brazilian Forest Code. Therefore, activities that remove carbon will be carried out in areas other than those of the project.

Sustainable forest management involves the careful management of forest resources to ensure their conservation and sustainable use, while carbon generation refers to projects that seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the sequestration or reduction of CO²e emissions. In the case of the ABC project, management activities are well regarded, as they contribute to the project's monitoring and surveillance activities. The area subject to suppression, which actually becomes the project area, has on three sides of its perimeter the legal reserve of properties that are owned by the same owner. This assists in the physical protection of the project area, which is also in the owner's interest for preservation.
