Conserving more than 70 thousand hectares in the Arc of Deforestation since 2009, protecting the Amazon and promoting sustainability.

Located in the Arco do Dematamento, a region where the highest rates of deforestation in the Amazon are found, one of the main objectives of the Florestal Santa Maria (FSM) REDD+ project is to protect the biodiversity of fauna and flora through the conservation of forests and socio-environmental activities.

PROJECT RECORDS AND ACTIVITIES

The Florestal Santa Maria REDD+ project maintains an ecological corridor that controls soil fragmentation and facilitates connectivity between different habitats.

One of the biodiversity activities is capturing images and cataloging the animals present in the project area. Jaguars, ocelots, tapirs and deer are the most common.

ACTIONS FOR THE COMMUNITY

First Aid Training: periodic training with the aim of training the community for emergencies, complementing brigade training and mitigating risks related to sustainable forest management activities.

Health events: interviews with the local community identified dissatisfaction with public health services in the region. The project seeks to diagnose and prevent diseases through exams, vaccinations and awareness talks. We have already carried out medical consultation and vaccination campaigns in partnership with the Municipal Health Department of Colniza.

Fire Brigade Training: recurring training with the aim of mitigating the impacts of fires and conserving the forest and its biodiversity. The project provides the necessary equipment and machines.

ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE PROJECT TO DATE

Our efforts to positively transform the community come first. Transform to conserve.

Two species of rare dogs were found in the project territory: the bush dog and the short-eared wild dog.
